John L. May, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician with Sacred Heart Medical Group, recently earned his certification in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine from the American Board of Preventive Medicine, the member-certifying body of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
 
Dr. May is the only board-certified hyperbaric physician in Pensacola and one of only twenty such board-certified physicians in the state of Florida.

The subspecialty of Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine is a discipline that specializes in the prevention of injury and illness due to exposure to environments in which the ambient pressure is increased, such as in diving or hyperbaric chamber exposure. It also consists of the therapeutic use of high environmental pressure and the delivery of oxygen under high pressure to treat disease and wounds. The scope of the subspecialty emphasizes the occupational, environmental, safety and clinical aspects of diving, hyperbaric chamber operations and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Dr. May joined Sacred Heart Medical Group in 1999 and was later appointed as the director of hyperbaric medicine at the Sacred Heart Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine in 2006. 

The Sacred Heart Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care Center offers hyperbaric oxygen therapy for persons with chronic wounds at Sacred Heart Medical Park on Airport Boulevard in Pensacola. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is painless and is typically used to enhance the body’s natural healing process. Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is the intermittent breathing of 100 percent oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. The treatment must be administered in a specially constructed chamber.

Our Wound Center uses hyperbaric oxygen treatment in combination with aggressive local wound care and overall patient management to treat a variety of problem wounds where blood flow or local oxygen delivery is impaired.
